Burgoyne 172 is a Starfleet officer and a member of the dual-gendered Hermat race, whose members possess both male and female genitalia. Due to their dual-gendered nature the Hermats have created their own pronouns, and use “s/he” and “hir”.
Lieutenant Commander Burgoyne 172, or “Burgy” as s/he is known to hir friends and colleagues, served as Chief Engineer of the U.S.S. Excalibur when the ship was assigned to ongoing humanitarian relief efforts in the fallen Thallonian Empire. Burgy is very sociable and outgoing, and was known among the crew for hir sense of humour and flirtatious nature.
Burgoyne was immediately attracted to the ship’s new Chief Medical Officer, a Vulcan woman named Doctor Selar, but she initially rejected hir advances. Burgy then enjoyed a brief relationship with helmsman Lieutenant Mark McHenry, but eventually s/he and Selar did become involved. Their relationship was complicated and tumultuous and resulted in Selar giving birth to their son Xy.

In the year 2376 Burgoyne was promoted to full commander and appointed as the new First Officer. Some of the crew–including Burgy hirself–initially questioned Captain Calhoun’s judgement about the promotion, having doubts about whether s/he was suited to the role of second in command. Burgoyne rose to the challenge and soon proved that Calhoun’s faith in hir was justified and served with distinction as the Excalibur faced various conflicts and crises.
Burgoyne 172 was created by Peter David for the Star Trek: New Frontier series of novels by Pocket Books. S/he made hir comic book debut in Star Trek: New Frontier “Double Time” by Peter David and Michael Collins. This issue was published by Wildstorm in November 2000.
