Hey. Hi. Hello. Let’s finish up looking at comics, trades, and graphic novels coming for November release. This monthly column features items from Dark, Horse, DC, Image, IDW, and Marvel. You’ll find items from publishers such as BOOM, Archie, Black Mask, Vault, other small and indy presses in part one. Highlighted here are some things that stood out to me. Please look over the list because there’s so much more!
Over at DC there’s cause for excitement with JSA featuring Obsidian and Jade and their father Alan Scott along with other beloved characters. Renee Montoya receives a change of scenery aboard the Justice League’s new Watchtower where as the Question she’ll investigate a mystery in a six parter. Black Lightning along with daughter Anissa (aka Lightning) return to comics. Tate Brombal writes a new Batgirl series starring Cassandra Cain.
Look for a Teenage Negasonic Warhead one shot from Andrew Wheeler and Eleonora Carlini that should be great fun! Psylocke gets a miniseries by Alyssa Wong and Vincenzo Carratu. Declan Shalvey continues Mystique’s adventures. Kelly Thompson and Gurihiru return to Jeff the shark with a Venom War It’s Jeff special!
Fans of Wendy and Richard Pini’s Elfquest can look forward to the Complete Elfquest Future Quest Coming from IDW, Ben Kahn and Sonia Liao’s Monster High Howliday looks like a lot of fun! Colleen Coover and Paul Tobin’s Bandette will have a new fourth volume collection.
Steve Orlando and Emilio Pilliu team up on a queer romance drama spin off of Mirka Andolfo’s Sweet Paprika in Sweet Paprika Open For Business. The biggest surprise of all was finding a new — and AFAIK the first — collection of Vaughn Bode’s Deadbone Erotica comics & strips. Bode wrote of himself in his 1973 comic Cheech Wizard/Schizophrenia: “I was: auto-sexual, heterosexual, homosexual, trans-sexual, uni-sexual, omni-sexual. Problem with me was, I didn’t just want to be any one thing anymore. I wanted to be a whole spectrum of human things: man, woman, child, artist, student, lover, warrior…the price to be me is high, and not done even now but I found my plumbline to soul. We are aligned and flowing smooth wherever our course is to go.” While Bode’s honesty about himself is surprising for 1973. Given the obscenity laws of the time you may want to look at copy first to see how much, if any, queer content there is in the collection. Even so, the collection’s importance in preserving and presenting Bode’s work to a new audience can’t be understated.
