Ryan Kalil‘s 2018 season will be his last in the NFL.

The Carolina Panthers center made that clear on Tuesday, per the Charlotte Observer.

Kalil, who turns 33 in March, has played his entire career with the Panthers. Drafted 59th overall out of USC in 2007, the center has appeared in 132 games (129 starts) throughout his career, picking up five Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro nominations (two-time first teamer) along the way.

Kalil was the center of offensive lines that opened holes for running backs DeAngelo Williams jersey and Jonathan Stewart, who combined to post three 1,000-yard rushing seasons in their career, with each breaking the mark in 2009. He also was a key part of a Panthers team that won the NFC and reached Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 season.

Unlike longtime players who announce their retirement prior to their final season, Kalil doesn’t want the sentimental moments.

“I’m not doing the farewell tour,” he said, per the Observer, “that’s for sure.”

Kalil battled a neck injury last season and has been cleared to play in 2018, but won’t reveal much else for fear of giving his opponents a target. After Bills center Eric Wood retired due to a neck injury, it’s understandable why Kalil would be guarded about his own health.

Coach Ron Rivera said upon hiring offensive coordinator Norv Turner that he wanted to see Newton get to “another level.” That level, however, won’t necessarily include making Cam a statuesque pocket passer.

Panthers new QB coach Scott Turner — who was a quality control coach in Carolina during Newton’s rookie season — told Max Henson of the team’s official website that Cam’s unique talent won’t go to waste.

“What he has done has really refined his game, really become a pro, but he’s going to play his way,” Turner said. “He’s going to run — that’s what makes him the dynamic player he is — but also making the throws in the pocket, going through his reads. All of those things come from experience, and he’s played seven seasons now.”

Turner’s job is to help Newton sand down the rough edges. The QB’s biggest trouble during his first seven seasons were fits of inaccuracy, often sailing passes high. For his career, he has a 58.5 completion percentage. The past two seasons he averaged a 56 percent completion rate on 1,002 pass attempts.

Jameis Winston jersey really lost his cool at the end of this one. After being sacked by Kawann Short on a last-gasp drive, Winston lost the ball on fumble to Julius Peppers to that put the game away. Winston was livid with the call, yelling at officials as he was held back by teammates. He continued to yell on the sideline and had to be restrained by coaches and players from running onto the field. After the game, TV cameras showed him apologizing to referee Jerome Boger. It remains to be seen if he’ll face any discipline for his outburst, which resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Up until letting his emotions get the better of him, Winston was the primary reason why the Buccaneers (4-11) nearly pulled off the upset. He completed 21 of 27 passes for 367 yards and a touchdown. It’s too bad he was sacked six times and the Buccaneers lost three fumbles against Carolina — otherwise they might have won.

Damiere Byrd played a significant role in this one. His 103-yard touchdown return in the first half was exactly what the Panthers needed to offset a strong early-game performance by the Buccaneers. It gave the Panthers a temporary lead, and allowed them to stay neck and neck with Tampa going into halftime.

Doug Marrone: Jaguars’ quarterback job up for grabs

Are Blake Bortles’ days as the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ starting quarterback numbered?

After a second consecutive mediocre preseason outing from his franchise signal-caller on Thursday night, Jags coach Doug Marrone told reporters that Jacksonville has a quarterback competition on its hands.

“It’s this simple: I’m looking for the best person to lead this offense,” Marrone told reporters, per John Oehser of the team’s website. “[The QB position] is right up there for grabs, and either person can take it.”

Marrone added, on Bortles: “It’s not like he’s not the quarterback. He’s got to go earn it.”

The coach’s comments come on a night when the Jaguars, playing on national television, were shut out in the first half in a home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, during which Bortles appeared out of his element once again. The fourth-year quarterback’s severe underthrow of a wide-open Allen Robinson in the second quarter earned him a chorus of boos from the Duval faithful.

Bortles’ outing with the first-team offense was so underwhelming that Marrone sent backup quarterback Chad Henne out at the end of the first half and start of the second half with the starters. Henne’s entry on Thursday appears now like a prelude of what is to come at Jags camp.

Through two preseason games, Bortles is 11 for 18 for 81 yards with no touchdowns and no picks, while Henne is 11 for 16 for 183 yards with one TD. Third-stringer Brandon Allen was the most impressive signal-caller, and Jacksonville’s leading rusher, on Thursday night; he is 15 for 22 for 229 yards with two TDs through two exhibitions.

When asked how Bortles was in terms of his decision-making and accuracy, Marrone said bluntly, “Good enough for me to stand here and say he gives us the best chance to win.”

Bortles being named the starter wouldn’t be a surprise in years past, as he has started the last 45 games for the franchise. But Marrone’s announcement bookends a week during which Marrone announced the QB position was up for grabs between Bortles and veteran backup Chad Henne, the latter of whom then started Jacksonville’s third preseason game, often seen as the “dress rehearsal” for the regular season.

Neither signal-caller was groundbreaking in Thursday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers. In five first-half series, Henne went 8 of 14 for 73 yards. Bortles played seven series in the second half and went 12 of 16 for 125 yards and one touchdown.

After Thursday night’s tilt, Marrone told reporters he wasn’t ready to name either man the starting quarterback. That has since changed.

Despite the announcement, Bortles still appears to be on the shortest of leashes in Jacksonville, even if Marrone insists that Bortles has “the same leash I would give any other player on our team.”

According to the team’s announcement, Bortles has only been named the starter for the Jaguars’ season opener and was not declaratively named the starting quarterback for the entire season. This is more than semantics. This QB competition is not over.

The Jaguars announced Sunday they signed veteran back DuJuan Harris. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Third-year back T.J. Yeldon suffered a hamstring injury in the Jaguars’ Week 2 preseason game Thursday night. With Yeldon and Leonard Fournette (foot) sidelined, Harris can help fill the void at running back for the remainder of preseason action. Harris was previously with the team back in 2011.

Harris most recently played for the San Francisco 49ers, and was released by the team in May. He’s also had stints with the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers.

In a corresponding move, the team waived cornerback Charles Gaines.

2016 new season first night race: Panthers & Broncos Preview

Panthers & Broncos

NFL 2016-17 regular season opener will be officially started on September 9, this will be a repeat of the Super Bowl 50, the Denver Broncos will face the Carolina Panthers at home.

This offseason, the Denver Broncos can say is “House leakage slants meet rain of the same night”. The legendary quarterback Peyton Manning announced his retirement, the backup quarterback Brock Osweiler switched to Texans; the main hero of the Super Bowl outside linebacker Von – Miller’s contract was tortuous. Meanwhile, the district rival Oakland Raiders reinforced their lineup once again this offseason, will challenge the status of the Broncos new season. The Carolina Panthers is relatively low-key since the last Super Bowl failure. Turnover is relatively less during the offseason, the Panthers will have more choices on the offensive end in the case of the large wide receiver return from injury next season. The two teams with better defensive group meet again in the new season, what is Newton’s respond when he faces the enemy Miller?

Offensive:

Panthers & Broncos offensive

Quarterback and frontline offensive are the biggest weakness of the Broncos. Peyton Manning’s retirement and Brock Osweiler’ departure, let the Broncos has thought of everything for the quarterback in the offseason. So they signed the “Thanksgiving legend” Mark Sanchez in the free market, then bring in the potential quarterback Paxton Lynch in the draft. Sanchez was brutally released after the offseason, but Trevor Siemian, the 2015 seventh-round pick, will serve as the main quarterback of the Broncos. We will pay close attention to the sophomore. The offensive lineup weakens again, although they signed the former Seahawks left tackle Russell Okun, who also need further observation on his performance. Although the Broncos offensive group retains much of its weapons, but the young quarterback and broken offensive line will be the greatest difficulty on their defending road.

As for the Panthers, their problem may still be in the offensive line. Although their ability to cover the road in the league second to none, there are indeed some problems in the aspects of covering passing. The Panthers offensive group has no much changes, but the once main wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin returned from injury. The Panthers will have three giant arms in the red zone with the second-year rookie Devin Funchess, veteran tight end Greg Olsen and the receiver group, which will bring them a variety of tactical selections. Newton-Tolbert, the privity of this combination, needless to say, they will be a significant role.

Defense:

Panthers & Broncos defense
Although Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan successive “escape” the plateau, the Broncos defense group still has the strongest strength. The new season we can still see the full impact force partners of the Broncos. Though we may not see the Miller-Virgin combination due to injury, but the young Sean Ray will give us bring more fresh look. The Broncos success last season largely depends on tough defense, the terms of preventing transmission is not perfect due to limited congenital conditions, but the powerful athleticism can make up a lot of deficiencies.
